A great example of Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from the Todd Brothers Ranch, a family-run vineyard in the western outskirts of Geyserville. The rocky, steep red volcanic soil makes these vines struggle so that they produce less than 2 tons per acre of tiny, jet-black grapes.
These mountain vines always produce substantial wines, with plenty of texture and tannin to balance the intense fruit flavors of blackberry and cassis. We describe it as a “wine in search of a rib-eye steak,” since it has a structure and flavor profile to mesh perfectly with grilled meats and hearty sauces.
The 2013 vintage featured picture-perfect ripening conditions in the summer and fall: warm, dry weather and no danger of rain. The steady weather made it one of the best vintages in recent memory, with grapes that were able to attain ripeness and full-flavors without the alcohol that is associated with heat-spikes at the harvest.
The grapes were hand-picked, sorted, crushed and then naturally fermented on the native yeast found on the grape skins. Since Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the few varietals that blends well with new oak flavors, we aged the wine in 15% new French oak barrels and the remainder in older French oak barrels. After 20 months, the wine was ready for bottling. With it’s complexity and firm structure, we believe the wine will continue to improve over the next fifteen years, and will drink well for many years afterwards.
